Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 244. ISAAC WILSON BERRY Warden of Oregon's State Penitentiary, is a most capable and courteous official, and is eminently fitted for the position he occupies. He is a native of the State of Indiana, born at Delphi, Carroll county, March 18, 1851. Alexander M. Berry, his father, was born in Pennsylvania, of Scotch ancestry. He married Miss Mary Ann Wilson, and there were born to them in Indiana two children. In 1852 Mr. Berry crossed the plains to Oregon, and engaged in mining in Jackson county, and in Del Norte county, California. After five years of fair success in this industry, he determined to make his home on the Pacific coast, and sent for his wife and two children, who made the journey by way of Panama in 1857. He continued mining for three years, and in 1860, removed to Jacksonville, Oregon; here he purchased 160 acres of land and turned his attention to agriculture. Three children were added to the family after they came to Oregon. Isaac Wilson Berry is the oldest of the five children. He was given the advantage of a good education in the schools of Corvallis, and in 1870 started out in life to meet its responsibilities on his own account. He followed the vocation to which he had been reared, and was a successful husbandman until 1887, when he received the appointment of assistant warden of the State Penitentiary; he served in this capacity four years, and in 1891 was promoted to the position he now holds. His wide experience gained in the office of assistant has been invaluable to him; there he became thoroughly familiar with every detail of the management of this great institution, and has shown superior executive ability. Mr. Berry was united in marriage November 19, 1879, to Miss Dora L. Cardwell, a native of the State of Iowa, and of this union two interesting children have been born. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in May 2005 by Diana Smith.
