"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 603. Malheur County. JOSEPH A. MADDEN One of the enterprising citizens and capable business men of the vicinity of Westfall is named at the head of this article and it is with pleasure that we grant to him a representation in this volume, since he is a man of worth and integrity; since he has labored faithfully here for the general advancement and welfare; and since he is one of the real builders of the county. Mr. Madden was born in Perry county, Ohio, on March 5, 1837, being the son of Hezekiah and Mary Madden. He attended the schools of the day, which were held in log cabins, and humble ones at that, and thus he gained his education. At the age of eighteen years he came to northwestern Ohio, and thence to Mills county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming, also labored at saw milling. He returned to Ohio and in 1861 he married Miss Rachel H. Spencer, and then returned with his young bride to Iowa. When the memorable call came for "ninety-day" men he responded promptly and went to fight for his country. He served his time and then returned home and after the war he removed his family to southwestern Missouri, where he lived for three years, and then returned to Iowa, whence, in 1874, with a train of thirteen emigrant cars he came to San Francisco, and thence by steamboat to Portland. Later he came to The Dalles, and there engaged in raising cattle and sheep until 1881, at which time he sold his property there and came overland to his present place, which is located about four miles northwest from Westfall, and consists of two hundred and forty acres of especially fertile land. It is largely cultivated to alfalfa and some grain. He has the farm well improved, with fine buildings and a good orchard. He has plenty of water to irrigate his land and possesses a goodly bunch of cattle. In addition to handling this farm Mr. Madden and his son, Charles, have been operating a general merchandise business in Westfall, which they sold in June, 1901. Mr. Madden has always been on the frontier, in Ohio, in Iowa, and in Oregon. He has always manifested those qualities of worth and distinction that characterize the true frontiersman and which have done so much in the advancement of the interests of this country. In politics he is a Republican and displays the interest that become the intelligent citizen. He has been justice of the peace for several terms. In all his business relations of late Mr. Madden has taken his son as partner, and together they are interested in the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Madden have become the parents of two children, Charles W., who married Mamie Jackson, and has one child, Elden Leslie; and the other is Ida M., wife of James Stingle. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
