"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 622. Malheur County. JONATHAN B. BIGELOW the capable and enterprising gentleman, whose name is at the head of this article is one of Malheur county's thrifty agriculturists, and has labored here faithfully in the interests of improvement and building himself and family a comfortable home. Mr. Bigelow was born in St. Charles county, Missouri, on September 6, 1851, being the son of Rufus and Henrietta (Eveisman) Bigelow. While he was a child he went with his parents to Saline county, in his native state, and there he was educated in the public schools. There also the family lived when the war broke out, and they were called upon to suffer much hardship and humiliation from the hordes of soldiers, who carried off nearly all the goods from his father's store. Also the famous James and Younger brothers raided the store, thus the father being nearly robbed of all his property. Subsequent to the war Jonathan worked on a farm, and on March 29, 1877, he was married to Miss Neoma Woolard. Mr. Bigelow started to Paradise, Nevada, Humboldt county, and there they labored until 1889, when he came across the country to the Malheur valley. He returned for stock, and when he landed here he was possessed of less than twenty dollars. The first winter was one of hardship, and he gained his provisions by selling sage brush in Vale, and he experienced the real life of the pioneer, and he has won success by his hard efforts of labor and industry and skillful management. Later Mr. Bigelow moved to Owyhee, and then again moved to the vicinity of Nyssa, and in the spring of 1901 he came to his present place. He owns one hundred and twenty acres five miles southwest from Nyssa, and forty acres of this is under the Owyhee ditch. He has a fine field of alfalfa, a thrifty young orchard and a good berry garden and many other improvements. Mr. Bigelow carries a policy in one of the Colorado accident companies, and he is a skillful manager of business affairs. To Mr. and Mrs. Bigelow there have been born the following children: Mirtle L., who was married to J. I. Hatfield, but is now deceased, leaving two children; Mrs. Cleora Watkins; Lesse R.; Silas B.; Grover; Owen W. Mr. and Mrs. Bigelow are members of the Methodist church, and are exemplary in their walk and faithful in the support of the faith, being people of integrity and uprightness, and are highly esteemed by all who know them. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
