Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 109. JOHN C. MOOMAW One of the most influential and useful citizens of the vicinity of Hubbard, Marion county, is John C. Moomaw, who is engaged in the operation of a well equipped saw and planing mill, and who also owns a well improved and productive farm of ninety acres in that locality. Mr. Moomaw was born in Marion county, Kansas, on the 11th of November, 1870, and is a son of Amos Rice and Mary (Nininger) Moomaw. His father was a native of Virginia, from which state he moved to Kansas when sixteen years of age, and for many years was a resident of that state, his death occurring in California in July, 1924. The mother died in Jackson county, Oregon, while the family was en route to Coos county, and the father subsequently married again. To his first union were born seven children, as follows: Maggie, who is the wife of W. A. Van Horn, of Ashland, Oregon; John C., of this sketch; W. A., who was married to Miss Ella Carl; Charles A., of Coquelle, Oregon, who was married to Miss Leta True; Perna, who is the wife of B. E. Nosier, of Coquelle; Jennie, who is the wife of A. M. Snyder, of Stockton, California; and Ira A., who was married to Miss Inez Vote and lives in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Moomaw was about fourteen years of age when the family located in Coos county. He secured his education in the public schools and Coquille Academy, at Coquille, and after being connected with various enterprises, became managing owner of a fleet of five steamboats, operating under the name of Coquille River Transportation Company in the Coos Bay district, running between Coquille and Brandon. These boats were devoted to towing, freighting and passenger service, and, under Mr. Moomaw's able management, proved a very profitable enterprise, and also contributed in large measure to the development of this section of the state. Mr. Moomaw followed that business for fourteen years and then sold his interests to the North Pacific Steamship Company, after which he came to Hub-bard, Marion county, and established a sawmill and planing mill, which he has operated to the present time and which through the years has been one of the most important industrial enterprises of this locality. During the fifteen years that he has operated this mill he has turned out an enormous quantity of pine and fir lumber, mostly shipping it in the rough, and his mills, which are run by steam power, are well equipped in every way. A man of good business judgment and energetic methods, he has been an important factor in the business prosperity of his community and is rightfully regarded as one of Hubbard's best citizens. His fine farm is devoted mainly to the raising of corn, small grain, fruit and potatoes and he has maintained the place in excellent condition. Mr. Moomaw was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Dement, of Myrtle Point, Oregon, whose father, Samuel Dement, brought his family, by covered wagon, to Coos Bay in the early '50s. She received a good education, attending the public schools and Coquille Academy, and is a woman of splendid character, popular in the circles in which she moves. Mr. and Mrs. Moomaw have four children: Claud S., who was educated in the schools of Salem and now lives at Hubbard, was married to Miss Lucile Sholl and they have four children, Jack, Iris, Carroll and Mack; Gladys is the wife of Benjamin Baker, of Santa Ana, California; H. A., who graduated in mechanical engineering from the Oregon Agricultural College and now teaches in the Spokane high school, was married to Miss Helen Frye, of the Willamette Valley; and Elda is a student in the public schools of Hubbard. Mr. Moomaw has served for fourteen years as a member of the school board and in all commercial and civic affairs with which he has been identified has shown a progressive spirit, maintaining a commendable interest in the progress and welfare of his community, throughout which he commands the highest measure of confidence and respect. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
