No physician in Marion county enjoys a higher reputation than Dr. James E. Webb. who has successfully practiced in Mount Angel for more than a quarter of a century, and renders important and valuable service to the community in the office of mayor as well as in his professional capacity. He was born in Michigan and his parents, G. A. and Elizabeth M. (Nichol) Webb, migrated to Oregon in 1886. They settled in Silverton, where the father, one of its pioneer realtors, prospered in business and contributed materially toward the upbuilding and improvement of that locality. He fought for the Union during the dark days of civil strife, serving in Company I, of the Fifth Michigan Infantry, and lost an arm in the battle of Fredericksburg. His demise occurred in 1911 and the mother passed away in 1922. Dr. Webb attended the public schools of Michigan and continued his studies in Oregon. He received the M. D, degree from Willamette University in 1898 and played center on its first football team. For three years he was a surgeon for the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company, making his headquarters at The Dalles, and in 1901 opened an office in Mount Angel. He is well versed in the science of medicine and surgery and has established a large general practice. Calm, decisive and well poised, he Inspires confidence in his patients and displays marked ability in solving the difficult problems which are constantly arising in connection with his professional duties. In 1917 he laid aside his practice and entered the service of his country. He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps and rose to the rank of captain. For a time he was stationed at Camp Lewis, Washington, and was afterward assigned to duty with a troop train, with which he traveled to many parts of the United States. He was first with the Ninety-first Division but later was transferred to the Thirteenth and was in readiness for overseas duty when the armistice was signed. In 1898 Dr. Webb was married in Salem to Miss Amy 0. Kinser, a daughter of A. S. and Olive Kinser, who came to Oregon early in the '80s. Her father also enlisted in the federal army and served with a company of Illinois cavalry while the Civil war was in progress. Dr. and Mrs. Webb have two children, Georgie E. and Arden E., both of whom were born in Mount Angel, The former was graduated in June, 1927, from St. Vincent's training school and follows the profession of nursing. Dr. Webb belongs to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and from the time the Silverton Aerie was established he has been retained as its surgeon. He was one of the first presidents of the Community Club, which he aided in organizing, and has always evinced a deep interest in matters touching the growth and advancement of this locality. For eight years he was a councilman and for six years has served as mayor of Mount Angel. His administration has been marked by the institution of needed reforms and improvements and his course has been strongly commended. At one time Dr. Webb was a breeder of fine horses, which he exhibited at various shows, and won many blue ribbons. He also studied music and for many years was a member of the Mount Angel Band.
