HELTZEL Among the able attorneys who are maintaining the prestige of Salem's legal fraternity is numbered James G. Heltzel, a well known practitioner with a background of twenty years' experience in the profession, and formerly a member of the state legislature. He was born December 14, 1880, in Colfax, Washington, and his father, M. L. Heltzel, served in the Civil war. Late in the '60s he settled in Eugene, Oregon, and there married Melinda A. Kelly, who in 1859 had made the overland journey to the Pacific coast in company with her mother, also locating in Eugene. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Heltzel moved to Colfax, Washington, where he spent the remainder of his life. His widow now resides in Salem and has reached the age of seventy-five years. James G. Heltzel supplemented his public school education by a course in the Willamette University of Law and was graduated with the class of 1907. He has practiced in Salem for twenty years and is considered one of the most successful lawyers of the city. He is well versed in legal science and has demonstrated his ability to handle intricate cases. In 1920 he was appointed district attorney and completed the unexpired term of Max Gehlhar, meeting every requirement of the office. Mr. Heltzel was called to the state legislature in 1913 and gave deep thought and study to each question brought before the house, supporting all constructive measures. In 1906 Mr. Heltzel married Miss Clara A. Holmstrom, of Salem, Oregon, and they now have four children: John, James, Margaret and Charles. Along fraternal lines Mr. Heltzel is connected with the Knights of Pythias and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He gives his political allegiance to the republican party and his public spirit is denoted by his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Marion County and Oregon State Bar Associations and conforms his practice to the highest ethical standards of the profession. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
