Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 231. JACOB G. RUNK In connection with the agricultural interests of Lane county, Jacob G. Runk enjoys a splendid reputation, having developed a fine farm near Eugene, where he is engaged in general farming, stock raising and dairying with gratifying success. Mr. Runk is a native of Indiana and a son of J. P. and Rosie (Hill) Runk. The father died in that state and the mother afterwards became the wife of F. J. Schneider. In 1884 the family moved to Oregon and Mr. Schneider took up a homestead on the Lorane road, towards Sinclair, and about eight miles from Lorane, Lane county, and there he and his wife spent their remaining years. Jacob G. Runk received a good, practical public school education and remained on the home place until he reached young manhood, when he started out to make his own way, working on the farms of that locality for a few years. Going to eastern Oregon, he was employed on a sheep ranch about four years, after which he returned to Lane county for a short time. Again he went to eastern Oregon, where he remained two years and on his return to the Willamette Valley, he rented farming land for several years. He next bought a quarter section of land, nine miles west of Lorane, practically all of which was heavily covered with timber, and some of this he cleared, remaining there eight years. Selling that place, he bought his present farm of two hundred acres, of which he has about eighty acres cleared. He keeps from eight to twelve cows, besides sheep, goats, turkeys and chickens. He raises his own roughage and some grain, having threshed as much as eighteen hundred bushels of grain at a time. He has given close and thoughtful direction to his efforts here and the success which has come to him has been well earned. Mr. Runk was united in marriage to Miss Etta Stone, who was born in Missouri, a daughter of William M. and Lucy Stone, who came to Oregon a short time after the arrival of Mr. Runk. To Mr. and Mrs. Runk have been born four children, Everett, who remains at home with his parents, and three who died in infancy. In the early days Mr. Runk did much donation road work and has rendered appreciated service as a member of the school board. About five years ago he built his present comfortable house and the farm, with its many substantial improvements, presents a very inviting appearance. He is in the best sense of the term a self-made man, having attained the enviable position which he now occupies in the agricultural world and in the regard of his community through his own unaided efforts. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
