Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 248. DR. J. J. FISHER The pioneer druggist of the city of Albina, now a portion of Portland, was born in Linn county, Missouri, in 1841. His parents, Daniel and Mary A. (Chapman) Fisher, were natives of Indiana and Virginia respectively. They emigrated to Missouri in 1837, and there Mr. Fisher passed the rest of his life, engaged in agricultural pursuits. After his death, which occurred in 1843, Mrs. Fisher returned to Tippecanoe county, Indiana, where his family resided. In Tippecanoe county the subject of our sketch attended school and at the age of eighteen began teaching. He worked his way through the Tippecanoe Battle Ground Institute, and had almost completed his course when the war of the Rebellion came on in 1861. The following September he enlisted in the First Regiment of the United States Mechanic Fusiliers, commanded by Colonel J. W. Wilfon. This regiment was to perform mechanical work in building bridges, barracks, etc., and was enlisted for three years. After they had spent six months in building barracks at Chicago, the Government wished to send them to the front, at which discord was engendered in the regiment and they were discharged. In 1862 Mr. Fisher again enlisted, this time for thirty days, his company being engaged against guerrilla warfare in Kentucky. The time of his enlistment having expired, he returned to Indianapolis and was mustered out. He then went home and, finding that two of his brothers had enlisted for three years, remained to take care of his mother and the family, and again engaged in teaching. In 1865 he entered the office of Dr. C. Angel, at Pittsburg, Indiana, and engaged in the study of medicine, continuing with his preceptor until 1869, in the meantime attending lectures at the Rush Medical College, Chicago. In 1869 he commenced practice at Iroquois, Illinois, where he remained until 1871, when he removed to Central City, Nebraska, and there continued the practice of his profession until 1880. While at Central City he served as Coroner and was also an active member of the School Board. In 1880 Dr. Fisher removed to the Pacific coast, and, after traveling extensively through Washington and Oregon, became interested in the town of Albina, and with the founding of the town in 1883 he purchased his present desirable property at Nos. 84 and 86 Russell street. Here he erected a two story frame building and opened the Pioneer Drug Store also continuing a general practice of medicine. In 1861 he built his present brick block, 50 x 60 feet, three stories and basement, the two upper floors being arranged for living rooms, while below are two handsome stores, one of which he occupies for his drug business. With the rapid development of the town and the advent of the electric railroad, his property has increased in value many fold. He has also made other valuable investments. Dr. Fisher was married at Pittsburg, Indiana, in 1869, to Miss Georgiana Williams. They have had two children only one of whom is living, Daisy B., wife of Albert Hillier. The Doctor is a member of the F. & A. M., and of George Wright Post, G.A.R. His is an active Republican, and in 1888 was elected to the State Legislature, where he served with honor to himself and his constituents. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
