Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 111. J. O. MATTHIS, M. D. In this day of advancement and progress in all of the sciences, success comes only as the result of genuine merit, a fact that is generally recognized. Among the physicians of Salem, who have in an unmistakable manner demonstrated their skill and efficiency in their special fields of labor, stands Dr. J. O. Matthis, who is regarded as one of the leading anesthesia and obstetrical experts in this section of the Willamette Valley. A native of Harrison county, Texas, he was born on the 9th of March, 1885, and is a son of H. M. and Martha Elizabeth (Chandler) Matthis. The mother, who was a native of Atlanta, Georgia, died in 1916. The lather, who followed the profession of teaching, came to Oregon in later life and died here. T. O. Matthis completed the public school course and attended Willamette University, after which he matriculated in the Memphis Hospital Medical College, at Memphis, Tennessee, where he was graduated in 1909, prior to which time he had served two years as interne in the General Hospital at Salem. He engaged in the practice of his profession at Monmouth, Oregon, where he remained from 1909 to 1917, when he enlisted in the Medical Corps of the United States Army and was stationed at Camp Lewis, Washington, where he served until January, 1918. In November, 1918, the Doctor located in Salem, where he has been engaged in the active practice of medicine to the present time. Though conducting a general practice, he specializes in anesthesia and obstetrics, in which he has gained a high reputation and a large practice. In 1909 Dr. Matthis was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. E. Bockes, of Amity, Oregon. She is a daughter of Louis L. and Georgeann (Lynch) Bockes, the latter born in Maryland and the former in Pennsylvania. They came to Oregon in May, 1894, and are now living on a farm near Amity. Dr. and Mrs. Matthis now have three children: C. Loretta, aged seventeen years; Claude D., aged fifteen years; and Mary Edna, aged nine. Dr. Matthis is a democrat in his political views and served as health officer while living at Monmouth. He is a member of the Marion County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society and the American Medical Association, and also belongs to the Salem Chamber of Commerce. A man of high attainments and earnest purpose, he has made a marked impression on those with whom he has come in contact and is regarded as one of the reliable and trustworthy physicians of the community in which he lives. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
