SEYMOUR JONES Seymour Jones is the present state market agent of Oregon, and is so directing the affairs of his office as to gain for him high prestige as a man of broad views and a comprehensive grasp of the various problems which necessarily arise in connection with his office. Mr. Jones was born in Springfield, Illinois, and is a son of Joshua W. and Polly Ann (Wills) Jones, both of whom are deceased. His father was a physician by profession, and he also engaged in farming in Illinois. Seymour Jones acquired a good public school education and taught school for two years. He turned his attention to the study of the law and was admitted to the bar of his native state at the age of twenty-one, engaging in the practice of his profession a short time in Springfield. In 1889 he went to Anacortes, Washington, where he engaged in law practice and was elected prosecuting attorney. Later he returned to the east, locating in Chicago, where he devoted himself to the practice of law and he also served as acting chief attorney of the sanitary district of Chicago. From there he went to Oklahoma, where he remained a year, and in 1907 paid a visit to Salem, Oregon. So well pleased was he with this section of the country that in 1908 he permanently located here and bought a fruit ranch, which he still owns. In 1916 he was elected to the state legislature from Marion county and was reelected in 1918, serving as speaker of the house during 1919 and 1920 with marked ability. In February, 1927, he was appointed to his present position as state market agent for a four-year term. In 1890 Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Pease, who was born and reared in Springfield, Illinois, and they are the parents of three children, namely: Melville S.. who resides in Eugene, Oregon; Mary Edna, who is the wife of Robert Woodville, of Berkeley. California; and Junette, who is the wife of Ellis E. Cooley. Mrs. Jones is a daughter of Calvin A. Pease and is descended from old colonial stock, members of her family having served in the war of the Revolution. She served a state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1924 and 1925, and is a past regent of Chemeketa chapter of that society. She is a past president of the Salem Women's Club and has taken an active interest in social club and civic affairs. Mr. Jones gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Grange, belonging also to the Salem Chamber of Commerce. He possesses a splendid personality, is cordial and friendly in manner, and has a wide acquaintance throughout the state, being held in high esteem by all who know him. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
