JOHN RAST proprietor of the Roseburg Brewery, was born in Switzerland, in 1838, In 1854 he emigrated to the United States, landing at New Orleans, thence proceeded up the Mississippi river to St. Louis, in 1855 went to Independence, Missouri, in 1859 to Shasta Valley, California, four months later began work on a farm and in a sawmill at Scottsburg, Douglas county, Oregon; in 1862 assisted in the erection of a mill at Gardner, and in 1864 came to Roseburg. He formed a partnership with Agotlib Mehl, in the brewery business, which was established in 1856 by Schenerman & Fudler. The daily capacity is fifteen barrels per day. Mr. Rast is also interested in the Roseburg Roller Mills, the first ever erected in the county. He was married in 1864 to Clara Jones, a native of this State, and they have six children, viz.: Regina, Samuel B., Maude, John, Gertrude and Lee. Socially, Mr. Rast is a Mason, and in his political views is a Democrat. He has served five years as a member of the City Council, and is recognized as one of Roseburg's most highly esteemed citizens. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
