"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. p. 486. Grant Co. JAMES ROBINSON Deceased. Any compilation that purports to give the history of Grant county would be incomplete were there failure to mention in connection therewith the capable gentleman whose name is at the head of this paragraph, since he was closely connected with its development and progress during a long life of commendable activity here, and it is with pleasure that we grant to his memory this article, being assured that he is one of the deserving citizens of this section. St. Johns, New Brunswick, was the spot of his birth, and 1834 the date, his parents being William and Annie Robinson. In that country he was educated and in 1863 started out in the activities of life for himself, coming via the Isthmus, to California, where he remained until 1855, then returned to his home in the east. The following year he came back to California, and from that time until 1864, he was engaged in the mines in Yreka, California, at which time he came to Canyon City, and there worked at mining. He was soon elected justice of the peace, and for four years he continued in that office, discharging the duties incumbent upon him with efficiency and impartiality. About 1872 he was selected by the people to act in the capacity of county clerk, and in these relations he acquitted himself with distinction. Following this period, wherein he had performed the duties of this important office with an ability and cleverness that gave general satisfaction, Mr. Robinson was often reinstated in the office of justice of the peace, and throughout it all he was characterized with the same sagacity and straightforwardness in dispensing justice. In 1871, at Canyon City, Mr. Robinson married Miss Lizzie, daughter of Thomas and Jane (Blake) Abrams, natives of England and pioneers to California in 1854, and to this happy union there were born three children, as follows: James S., deceased; Elnora S., deceased, and Edith May. On March 15, 1901, the angel of death came for Mr. Robinson and he stepped forth into the realities of another world. He was beloved and esteemed by all, and one of Grant county's capable and faithful citizens was then taken for whom all sincerely mourned. Mrs. Robinson is taking up the burdens of life alone since that sad event, manifesting a brave and good spirit, and nobly she is handling the affairs of life thus resting upon her. She has a good business in Canyon City, in the mercantile line, and also handles the express office, and she is highly esteemed by all. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
