"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 306. Baker County. JOSEPH S. JETT Among the leading farmers of Baker county, must be mentioned the man whose name gives caption to this review. He likewise takes a vital interest in political matters and exhibits broad-minded public spirit and a willingness to do what lies in his power for the upbuilding of his community and county and the advancement of the general welfare. As a man and member of society, his standing is an enviable one, and it affords us pleasure to be able to accord him representation here as one of the county's leading men. Mr. Jett is a native of Franklin county, Missouri, born May 12, 1844, his parents being William E. and Elizabeth Jett. In 1848 he accompanied his parents to Grundy county, same state, where he attended the district school during its sessions and worked on a farm the remainder of the time, until 1864. He then crossed the plains to Baker county, Oregon, locating first in the Powder river valley, near Baker City, where he lived until 1869. He then settled on the old Scott place, seven miles northwest of Huntington, on Burnt river, the original owners of which, Mr. and Mrs. Scott were shot by Indians in 1867. To the cultivation and improvement of this tract, he has devoted himself zealously since, with the natural result that it has long since been brought to such a state of cultivation as to produce abundant crops of alfalfa and other farm products, including fruit of various kinds. Mr. Jett also has a large band of cattle on the range. As before implied, our subject is a leader in political matters, his party affiliations being with the Democrats. He was married on December 11, 1881, to Henrietta Christenson, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, and they are now parents of eight children, Augusta M., Lizzie, deceased, Ida Pl, Clara, Ruth C., Joseph B., Hattie D., and Dorman E., all at home. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
