Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 205. J. T. BOGART One of the oldest farms in Lane county is that now owned and operated by J. T. Bogart on section 21, township 17, range 3 west, and which has been in the possession of his family continuously since 1852, a period of seventy-five years. This fine old place has always ranked among the best farms in this locality and, under the good management of the present proprietor is still very productive. J. T. Bogart was born here. June 9, 1888, and is a son of A. G. and C. M, (Withers) Bogart. His father was born in Iowa, June 25, 1844, and his mother in Corvallis, Oregon, November 27, 1856. The grandfather, Garret Bogart, brought his family from Iowa to Lane county, Oregon, in 1852, and took up a donation claim of three hundred and twenty acres, on sections 16 and 21, township 17, range 3 west, all of which was prairie land, located three miles northeast of Eugene. There he developed a good farm,. which he cultivated to the time of his death. A. G. Bogart was about eight years of age when he came to Lane county and his education was obtained in the district school, which at that time was known as the Bogart school, being located on his father's land. He remained at home until attaining manhood, when he engaged in farming at Cottage Grove, Lane county, where he remained until about 1890, when he returned and took charge of the homestead continuing its operation until shortly prior to his death, which occurred July 17, 1911. His wife died June 16, 1924. They were the parents of three children, of whom one died in infancy, while Mamie died when fourteen years of age. J. T. Bogart the other member of the family, attended the district school and had three years' work in the high school at Eugene, after which he took a commercial course in the Eugene Business College. For awhile after putting aside his text-books he was employed in a furniture store in Eugene, and then opened a tea, coffee and spice store in that city, which he sold about a year and a half later. During the following two years he ran a stock ranch near Lorane, Lane county, but in 1912 sold out and came back to the home place, where he has lived to the present time. He now owns one hundred and seven acres of the farm, on which he runs a large flock of pure-bred Shropshire sheep, and also raises abundant crops of hay and grain. In 1920 he erected a fine, modern house, which replaced the old brick house built by his grandfather about 1865 and which was the first brick farm house in Lane county. The first home on the place was a log structure, erected by his grandfather when he first located on the land. In addition to the supervision of his farm, Mr. Bogart has for four years been employed as a bridge foreman, having supervision of construction work on highway and county bridges, for which he has shown himself well qualified. Mr. Bogart has been married twice. On September 6, 1909, he wedded Miss Angie Owen, to which union was born a son, Belden, on September 16, 1911. On November 16, 1925, Mr. Bogart was married to Mrs. Margaret (Summers) Jackson, a native of Missouri, who by a former marriage has a daughter, Wilma, born May 21, 1915, and now attending school. Mr. Bogart is a member of Eugene Lodge, No. 357, B. P. 0. E., and Eugene Lodge, F. 0. E. He is regarded as a splendid citizen, one of his community's most progressive farmers, a man of sterling integrity and fine personal character, and has added prestige to a family name already honored throughout this section of the county. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
