Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 280. J. W. SADLER Every successful business concern adds to the development and prosperity of the community in which it is operated, and through his activities in the field of merchandising J. W. Sadler has contributed his full quota toward Aurora's progress, at the same time winning the legitimate reward of intelligently directed industry. A native of Virginia, he was born July 9, 1870, and is a scion of one of the colonial families of the south. His parents, J. C. and Georgina (Forest) Sadler, were also born in the Old Dominion and the mother now resides in Norfolk, but the father died during the childhood of J. W. Sadler. The son attended the public schools of Virginia and at the age of seventeen began his mercantile career in that state. In 1892 he came to the Pacific coast and opened a shoe store in San Francisco, California. Later he embarked in the same line of business in San Jose and remained in that city until 1905, when he came to Oregon. Locating in Aurora, he formed a partnership with a Mr. Chittenden, who became the senior member of the firm. At the end of six months the latter sold his stock to A. W. Kraus and the present style of Sadler & Kraus was then adopted. The business was established by Will Brothers and is now the oldest commercial enterprise in Aurora. The partners carry a general line of merchandise, handling dry goods, notions, shoes, clothing, hardware, groceries, etc., and their stock includes practically everything except farm machinery. The first store was located on the site now occupied by the Miller undertaking parlors and the present building, one hundred by eighty-seven feet in dimensions, was erected in 1915. Carefully studying trade conditions and always endeavoring to supply the needs of customers, the members of the firm have made their establishment a vital factor in the life of the. community and their patronage is drawn from a wide area. In 1895 Mr. Sadler was. married in Santa Monica, California, to Miss Helen Harlan, a native of Danville, Indiana, and a daughter of J. B. and Mary J. (Bedford) Harlan. Her father passed away in 1895 and the mother's demise occurred at Aurora, Oregon, in 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Sadler are the parents of a daughter, Peggie Helen, who was born in Aurora and is attending high school. While in San Jose, California, Mr. Sadler joined the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and is also connected with the Knights of Pythias, the Masons, and the Woodmen of the World. His wife belongs to the Eastern Star and is worthy matron of the Pythian Sisters. For many years Mr. Sadler was one of the councilmen of Aurora and as mayor of the town he followed a constructive policy productive of much good. He is thoroughly western in spirit and interests and his course has at all times marked him as a citizen of worth. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
