Malheur County. LAFAYETTE W. Mr. Goodrich was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 6, 1844, being the son of James and Nancy R. (Stone) Goodrich. While still a small child he went with his parents to Missouri, Polk county, and in 1849, the family started across the plains for California passing the first winter in Fort Leavenworth, whence in the following spring they made their way across the remainder of the weary waste of plains and mountains to California, and in 1861 the father started a hotel in a canvas house at Stockton, then a small burg. In 1854 the removed to Sutter county, and there, in 1864, our subject commenced for himself the battle of life. His first venture was with sheep, and soon we find him in Colusa county, in which latter place on September 26, 1869, he married Miss Lucy J., daughter of Warren and Catharine A. Markham. Mr. and Mrs. Markham came to California overland with ox teams from New York state, crossing the plains in 1852, on which trip, while the parents were in the territory of Utah, our subject's wife was born. They settled in Sacramento. Our subject sold out his sheep interests and removed to Tehama county and took up farming, later again going to Modoc county, where he resumed the raising of sheep. The winter of 1889-90 was so severe that he lost heavily, so he determined to change residence and came to Vale, and in 1892 came to his present place, where he started anew in the battle of life. He has a good home, has sixty acres of good land, well watered and improved, and a good band of cattle. The following children have been born to this worthy couple: Viola and Violetta, twins, the former being the wife of F. W. Stacey, and the latter is deceased; Trask E.; May V., wife of W. Wells; Eva V., wife of B. Richardson; Foster A., deceased; Marion E. Fraternally Mr. Goodrich is affiliated with the Masons, Neuville Lodge. No. 205.
