Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 68 MARION VEATCH An enumeration of the successful business men and public spirited citizens of Eugene, Oregon, must include the name of Marion Veatch, who has filled a large place in various activities relating to the progress and development of the city. He is one of the leading funeral directors of this locality and has so conducted his business as to gain the respect of alt who have had dealings with him. Mr. Veatch is a native of Vernon county, Missouri, born on the 9th of October, 1872, and is a son of F. M. and Amanda (Swearengin) Veatch, both of whom are deceased. He was reared on his father's farm and secured his education in the public schools of his native state. At the age of seventeen years he came to Oregon, where he engaged in farming until twenty-six years of age, and for the following three years was. engaged in placer mining. He then located at Cottage Grove and established a furniture store, which he conducted for eight years, followed by three years in the music business. In 1913 Mr. Veatch came to Eugene and bought an interest in the W. T. Gordon undertaking business. Later he purchased Mr. Gordon's interest in the business, which he conducted alone until 1926, when he sold an interest in the establishment to Harry G. Keeney. He has a splendid two-story building, sixty by sixty feet in size, containing a chapel seating four hundred people, and in all other respects the place is furnished and equipped in a modern and up-to-date manner. He employs two assistants and has a fine motor equipment, including three Studebaker cars and one Cadillac. Mr. Veatch is well adapted for this line of work, being courteous and attentive to the needs and tastes of those who seek his services, and gives thoughtful care to every detail of his work, in which he is regarded as an expert. On November 7, 1897, Mr. Veatch was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Ostrander, of Minnesota, and they are the parents of a son, Roy, who was graduated from the University of Oregon, took a postgraduate course in the University of California, and is now engaged in teaching. Mr. Veatch is a Mason, in which he has taken the degrees of both York and Scottish Rites; is a member of the Mystic Shrine, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and other societies. He is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving several years as a member of its board of directors and as president from September, 1926, to September, 1927. He is a past president and is now a director of the Young Men's Christian Association and is actively interested in Boy Scout work. He maintains an independent position in politics, though he was twice elected coroner of Lane county on the democratic ticket and is now a member of the city water board. He has shown a commendable interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of Eugene and is always ready to cooperate in all efforts to advance public interests, being regarded as one of the city's representative men. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
