Burris, one of the young and able members of Salem's legal fraternity, is an influential factor in state politics and is chief clerk of the house of representatives. He was born February 18, 1893, in Dallas county, Iowa, and is a son of John H. and J. L. (Finley) Burris, who came to Salem in 1899. His father is a well known fruit raiser of Marion county and resides south of the Capital city. When the family migrated to Oregon, Paul F. Burris was a boy of six and his public school education was acquired in Salem. In April, 1917, he enlisted in the aviation corps of the United States Army and was stationed at various fields in this country until November 27, 1919, when he was honorably discharged as a pilot. He then resumed his studies and in 1923 was graduated from Willamette University, receiving the degree of LL. B. In the same year he was admitted to the bar and has since practiced in Salem, devoting his time chiefly to real estate and corporation law. He is attorney for the state aid commission and his clientele is lucrative and important. He is well versed in statute and precedent and his arguments are strong, logical and convincing. Mr. Burris was married February 14, 1918, to Miss Florence Valentine, of Salem, and they now have two children: Nedry and John Paul, aged respectively seven and five years. Mr. Burris is chairman of the Marion county, republican central committee and during the last primary was in charge of Governor Patterson's campaign in Marion county. For four years he was assistant to the chief clerk of the house of representatives and is now filling the office of chief clerk, fulfilling every requirement of the position. He manifests a keen interest in military affairs and is captain of Company B, One Hundred and Sixty-second Infantry of the Oregon National Guard. He is a prominent member of Capital Post, No. 9, of the American Legion and drills its drum corps, which has won first prize for three years in succession. Mr. Burris is also affiliated with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Marion County, Oregon State and American Bar Associations.
