Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 506. PHILIP J. BARTLE, M. D. One of the most prominent and successful members of the medical profession in Lane county is Dr. Philip J. Bartle, of Eugene, where he has been engaged in practice since 1905. Not only has he received recognition as an able and skilled physician, but also in the general affairs of the community in which he lives has he shown himself to be a man of progressive and enterprising spirit, taking the lead in enterprises directly affecting the public welfare. Dr. Bartle was born in Steuben county, New York, on the 4th of June, 1874, and is a son of Rev. William and Hannah M. (Baxter) Bartle, who came to Oregon with the Doctor in 1905, and died here. The father was for many years an active minister of the Methodist Episcopal church. Dr. Bartle secured his preliminary education in public schools and later matriculated in the Barnes Medical College (now the medical school of St. Louis University), where he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1896. He then located in Kansas, where he practiced his profession until 1898, when he moved to Oklahoma, remaining there until 1905, in which year he came to Eugene. During the subsequent years he has built up a large and remunerative practice, having gained a wide and well merited reputation because of his success in combatting human ailments. He was one of the organizers of the Eugene Hospital Clinic, of which he is vice president. The hospital, which contains sixty beds, is modern in every respect and is one of the two standardized hospitals in this state outside of Portland, the other one being at Astoria. Dr. Bartle specializes in internal medicine and is regarded as an authority in his special field. On July 28, 1899, Dr. Bartle was united in marriage to Miss Willie A. Westfall, who was born in Missouri but was living in Oklahoma at the time of her marriage. To this union have been born two children: Ruth, the wife of Dr. Lester Edblom, who received his M. D. degree from the University of Oregon in 1927; and William W., who is a student in the law school of the University of Oregon. Dr. Bartle is a republican in his political views and has rendered effective service as a member of the school board, of which he was president. He is a member of the Lions Club, which he served as president in 1925; is also a member of the Lane County Medical Society, of which he is a past president; the Oregon State Medical Society, of which he is a past president and member of the board of counselors, and of the American Medical Association. He is president of the Bartle-Sweeney Company, which owns a large apartment house in Eugene. In his chosen field of endeavor the Doctor has attained distinctive success and he stands among the leading medical men of his section of the state. Essentially a man among men and possessing a strong and forceful personality, he has at all times commanded the respect of all who know him, and easily ranks with those citizens whose efforts have been directed toward the betterment of the community along all legitimate lines. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
