Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 3. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 169. R. T. BURGHARDT One of the prosperous industries of Eugene is the Eugene Foundry and Machine Company, which is owned and operated by R. G. Burghardt, who combines a high degree of technical skill with sound business ability and has built up a very gratifying business during the four years that he has been established here. Mr. Burghardt was born in Buffalo, New York, on the 17th of May, 1895, and is a son of August T. and Margaret A. (Lengfelder) Burghardt, the former now engaged in the picture and art business in Buffalo, New York. R. T. Burghardt served as an apprentice in pattern-making from the age of fourteen to nineteen years. He followed that trade until 1920, when he came to Eugene on a visit. He liked this section of the country and in 1923 he returned and, in July of that year he established the Eugene Foundry and Machine Company,as the successor to the Gross Brothers Iron Works, which had been established in the '90s. Mr. Burghardt completely remodeled the plant and now does everything in iron, brass and aluminum casting, electric and acetylene welding, and the making of ornamental iron work, grilles and other work of like character. He has a well equipped machine shop, employes from eight to twelve men and sells his products throughout the surrounding country. He also does general repair work on all lands of machinery, and does pattern-making and drafting. He has gained a splendid reputation for the high quality of his work and for his reliability in executing all contracts. On September 6, 1923, Mr. Burghardt was united in marriage to Miss Bertha L. McGuire, of Massachusetts, and they are the parents of a son, Roland John. Mr. Burghardt is a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Knights of Columbus, the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He is independent in his political views and in matters affecting the welfare of his city and county has shown a fine public spirit. He is loyal to his obligations of citizenship and his record has been such as to earn for him the respect of his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
