Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 448. THOMAS BAILEY For over three-quarters of a century the Bailey family, of which Thomas Bailey is a worthy representative, has been established in Lane county and during these years its members have been identified with its development and upbuilding, chiefly along agricultural lines. Thomas Bailey, who is now retired from active business affairs and is living in Eugene, is one of the large land owners of this county and has long been regarded as one of its representative citizens. He was born on his father's farm in Lane county, in 1857, and is a son of John and Elizabeth (Wright) Bailey, the latter born in Missouri. In the paternal line the family has been established on American soil for many generations. John Bailey was born in Kentucky in 1818 and lived there until some time in the '40s, when he went to Missouri. . In 1847 he crossed the plains with ox teams, arriving at Corvallis, Oregon, where he remained about two years. He went to California in the gold rush of 1849 and met with fair success in his quest of the precious metal. An older brother, Joseph, took out seventeen thousand dollars in gold, but in 1860 was killed by Indians at Pitt river. In 1850 Mr. Bailey returned to Missouri, and immediately came west again with a company of emigrants, and bringing with him one hundred head of cattle. He took up a donation claim seven miles west of Eugene, where he remained about three years. He then bought five hundred acres of land near Lorane, Lane county, where he lived two years, and then traded this land for what is now known as Bailey Hill. He also bought a section of land near by, thus becoming the owner of twelve hundred acres in addition to the donation claim, and there he lived until his death, in 1896. Mr. Bailey was twice married, first, in 1851, to Miss Elizabeth Wright, who had crossed the plains in the same train with him in 1850. To them were born five children, of whom two are living, Thomas and Mrs. J. R. Hill, of Eugene. The mother of these children died in 1862 and in 1865 Mr. Bailey was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Murphy, to which union were born the following named: Mrs. Fannie Wood, of Eugene; Mrs. Susan Waite, E. M., Robert E. and Frank. Thomas Bailey spent his boyhood years on his father's farm and secured his education in the district schools. When nineteen years of age he went to eastern Oregon, where he engaged in the sheep business, running fifteen hundred head for about four years. Selling out there, he returned to the Willamette Valley and for two years was engaged in farming the old Bailey homestead. He then rented a farm adjoining his father's place, west of Eugene, where he conducted general farming for seven years, also raising some stock. In 1890 he bought four hundred and twenty-seven acres of land near Junction City, to which he added more by later purchase, but has sold off part of it and now owns two hundred and sixty acres. Here he is engaged in diversified farming, raising a general line of crops, and also owns a goodly number of cows, sheep, hogs and chickens. He has been very successful in the operation of this place and in 1907 he moved into Eugene, where he is now living, though he still supervises the operation of the farm. In 1882 Mr. Bailey was married to Miss Anna Flint, who was born in Missouri, the latter of Pennsylvania. Her father spent most of his life in Missouri, where he followed the business of stock buying. In 1864 he crossed the plains but later a daughter of John and Louisa (Kayser) Flint, the former a native of Illinois and returned east, where he remained until 1874, when he went to California on one of the railroad emigrant trains. In 1882 he came to Oregon and lived in Junction City and Eugene, also renting a place near the old Bailey farm. Mrs. Bailey received a good education and taught school for some years before and after her marriage. To Mr. and Mrs. Bailey have been born six children, of whom one died in infancy, while John died at the age of nine years; Elsie, who attended the Junction City schools and later became a milliner, is now the wife of C. A. Doran, of Portland, Oregon, and they have two children, Thomas and Edward B. Doran. Edward F., who graduated from the law school of the University of Oregon in 1913, and is now an attorney in Junction City, was a charter member of the Phi Delta Theta college fraternity. He played football eleven years, three years with the high school team, four years at the University of Oregon and two years with the United States Marines, in which he had enlisted in June, 1917. He married Miss Helen Lee Rosenberg and they have a son, John Edward. Louise, who graduated from the University of Oregon in 1916, taught school for a number of years and was playground supervisor in Portland for awhile. She is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma college sorority. She is now the wife of J. B. Stam, of Portland, and to them have been born three children, Dorothy, Carroll and one deceased. Mary Ellen, who is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, graduated from the University of Oregon in 1921 and was married that same year to H. A. Moore, of Portland, to which union has been born a son. Thomas Berton. Since her marriage Mrs. Moore has done considerable newspaper work. In his political views Mr. Bailey has always supported the democratic party, while his religious affiliation is with the First Christian church of Eugene. He was deputy sheriff from 1912 to 1918. He is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in which he has attained the degree of the council of Royal and Select Masters, and the Degree of Honor. A man of forceful individuality and sterling integrity, he has always supported those measures which have been advanced for the betterment of the community and in all the relations of life he has been true and loyal to his responsibilities. For these reasons, as well as for his kindly and hospitable disposition, he is held in the highest esteem throughout the community which is honored by his citizenship. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
