SINK The gentleman whose name forms the caption of this sketch, is one of the most successful and scientific agriculturists and stock raisers in Sherman county. He resides three and one-quarter miles from the town of Wasco, on a model farm surrounded by all the comforts of life. He was born in Hancock county, Illinois, November 1, 1863, the son of Thomas W. and Luzina (Thomas) Sink, of whom mention is made in another portion of this work. Until he was twenty-three years of age our subject remained with his parents, and then he-faced the world on his own account. He came with the family to Sherman county, where be filed on landÑpreemptionÑin Hay Canyon, on which he remained two years. This he exchanged with his brother, George, for a quarter section of land situated near his present home. He was there two years, going thence to Portland, Oregon, in 1889, where he engaged in the transfer business. He organized the Thompson & Sink Transfer Company which enterprise was successfully conducted nine years. Then Mr. Sink disposed of his interest to his brother-in-law and returned to Sherman county, where, in 1898, he purchased this placeÑthen raw land. Subsequently he added to this and at present owns six hundred and forty acres. Upon this he has erected a neat, one-story cottage, containing eight rooms and a bath, surrounded by fine shade trees, commodious barn and substantial outbuildings, windmill, etc. He rears about two hundred head of hogs annually, Duroc Jersey and Berkshires. He owns a seven hundred pound registered boar and another registered Berkshire boar from the Ladd farm, near Portland, Oregon. He, also, has three registered sows. Mr. Sink annually raises about one hundred and fifty turkeys, having a full-blooded bronze gobbler, registered. He rears four hundred or more ducks yearly, having registered Pekin drakes from Hoover's poultry yard, Pullman, Washington ; also Toulouse geese, registered ; Plymouth Rock poultry, from which he secures five or six hundred chickens annually. He has recently added the White Wyandotte and White Leghorn strains to his poultry yards. The greater portion of this poultry is shipped to Portland. He has a fine, new orchard. December 29, 1886, at Wasco, our subject was married to Florence Thompson, born in Tennessee. She is the daughter of Jason and Celia (Holland) Thompson, both natives of North Carolina. Her paternal grandparents were of the same, state, of English ancestry. Jason Thompson, her father, served three years in the Civil war, and now lives at Mountaindale, Washington county, Oregon. The maternal grandparents were German and English. Mrs. Sink has six brothers and one sister : James, of Mountaindale ; Joseph and John, in the sawmill business ; Lush E., a manufacturer of brick, in Portland ; Ward and William, with Joseph and John, in the mill enterprise at Mountaindale; Julia, wife of Isaac Maxwell, of Mountaindale. Mr. and Mrs. Sink have two children, at home ; Jennie, aged seventeen ; and Edna, aged fifteen. Our subject is conceded in Sherman county to be the most scientific and business-like farmer in his vicinity. He devotes almost his entire attention to hogs and poultry. His fraternal affiliations are with the A. O. U. W., of Wasco; Knights and Ladies of Security, of Portland, of which Mrs. Sink is a member ; Sherman Lodge, No. 157, I. O. O. F., of Wasco; and the Rebekahs, Mrs. Sink being a member of the same. Politically he is a Republican, although not especially active in the various campaigns of his party. Recently, Mr. Sink has added to his registered stock on the farm, a magnificent French draft stallion, registered and weighing two thousand and two hundred and fifty pounds. This animal was secured through the McLaughlin Brothers, importers, of heavy draft animals. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in May 2009 by Diana Smith.
