Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 472. VIRGIL HAWKINS Virgil Hawkins, a worthy and industrious farmer in the vicinity of Eugene, Lane county, was born in Benton county, Oregon, in 1888, and is a son of Edward Harrison and Nancy Ellen (Taylor) Hawkins, mentioned at length in the sketch of Edward Herbert Hawkins, elsewhere in this work. Mr. Hawkins was reared under the parental roof, the family living in Benton county until 1889, when they came to Lane county, settling in 1891 on the place where Mr. Hawkins now lives. He was educated in the Bailey district school and the high school in Eugene. He has spent practically his entire life on the home place and now owns thirty-three acres of good land, the greater part of which is devoted to fruit, mainly cherries and walnuts, though he has here the largest variety of fruits to be found on any ranch in the county, acreage considered. He gives his close attention to the operation of the farm, in which he has realized substantial success. On January 1, 1925, Mr. Hawkins was united in marriage to Miss Hannah E. Rudd, who was born in Iowa, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rudd, her mother dying when she was quite young. The family moved from Iowa to Montana, and thence to Oregon about 1914. For about eight years prior to the World war Mr. Hawkins had been a member of the Oregon National Guard, holding the rank of lieutenant, and on the entry of the United States into the European conflict he joined the Sixty-fifth United States Coast Artillery, an Oregon organization, but was discharged from the service at Fort Stevens because of a crippled hand. Mr. Hawkins is a member of the Masonic and Elk lodges. He is a gentleman of excellent personal qualities, loyal and true in every relation of life, and holds an enviable place in the esteem and good will of his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
