"An Illustrated history of Baker, Grant, Malheur and Harney Counties : with a brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western Historical Pub. Co., 1902. Page 478. Grant County. W. D. INGLE It is with pleasure that we are enabled to grant the esteemed gentleman whose name is at the head of this article a representation in this volume of the history of Grant county, since he has labored her for years and has done much toward the upbuilding of the county and the advancement of its interests, having manifested, meanwhile, commendable zeal and ability, coupled with which are displayed an uprightness and integrity that stamp him as a true man and faithful citizen. The birth of Mr. Ingle occurred in South Carolina in the year 1837, and at an early age he was taken by his father to Darke county, Ohio. His parents were Daniel and Annie (Sharpe) Ingle, natives, respectively, of Kentucky and South Carolina. In Ohio his boyhood days were passed and there he received the education that fortified him for the battle of life. In 1846 he went to Illinois and there engaged in farming and stock raising for four years. Eighteen hundred and fifty-nine was the date that he crossed the plains by horse teams to California, the entire train having the misfortune to lose their horses. The Indians stole about four hundred of these animals, leaving only enough to haul the bare wagons, while many of the men were forced to walk the rest of the way. After spending some time in California he repaired to Grant county, and there took up farming and raising stock. At first he homesteaded land, then sold, and later bought school land one-half mile west from Mount Vernon, where he now has the fine estate of five hundred and sixty acres and is devoting his attention to handling cattle and horses and is one of the substantial stockmen of the county. In Knoxville, Illinois, in 1854, Mr. Ingle married Miss Julia Bibler, a native of Ohio, and seven children have been born to them, Laura L., May, Clara, Stella, Benton, Claude and Omertis. Mr. Ingle formerly was affiliated with the I.O.O.F., and he is highly esteemed in this section and enjoys the good will and confidence of his fellows. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
