Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 251. WALTER E. JACOBS Junior partner of the Ashland Roller Flouring Mill, was born in Maine, April 7, 1852, a son of Eben P. and Emily P. (McKinney) Jacobs, also natives of Maine. They are of English extraction, and their ancestors were early settlers of that State. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs were the parents of five children, of whom our subject was the third child. The family removed to Hudson, Wisconsin, in 1855, where young Walter was reared and educated. He removed to Puyallup, Washington, in 1887, purchased property, which he still owns, and was engaged in hop raising about four years. His parents removed to that State two years later, where they still reside. Mr. Jacobs came to Ashland in 1891, purchased the mill property and began operation. This old landmark was erected in 1854, by A. D. Hellman and his associates, at a cost of $15,000. The property has changed hands several times since, and November 1, 1892, became the estate of Messrs. Jacobs and Virgin, and they have made several changes and improvements. The mill is run by water power, and the overshot wheel has been changed to the more modern and economical seventeen-inch turbine, with thirty-two foot pressure, also annexing a large storehouse on one side and wareroom on the other. The various changes necessitated an outlay of some $2,800. The mill has a large trade, and reaches South as far as Redding, California, besides supplying the surrounding counties and mining settlements. Mr. Jacobs was married in Wisconsin, October 28, 1886, to Miss Ida C. Smith, a native of that State. They have an interesting family of three children: Georgiana M., Eva M., and Trixey P. Politically, our subject affiliates with the Republican party. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in May 2005 by Diana Smith.
