Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 322. WILLIAM H. ALEXANDER William H. Alexander, who, for fourteen years, has rendered effective and satisfactory service as city building inspector of Eugene, is particularly well qualified for this responsible post, as he was for many years recognized as an expert and trustworthy building contractor. He has been faithful and conscientious in the discharge of his duties and is numbered among those who have labored for the progress and development of Eugene. Mr. Alexander was born in Linn county, Oregon, July 30, 1857, and is a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hite) Alexander, the father a native of Virginia and the mother of Illinois. Their marriage occurred in the latter state and in 1853 they crossed the plains to Oregon. The father took up a donation claim in Linn county, to the cultivation of which he devoted his efforts for a few years, and then moved to Peoria, Oregon, where he died in 1864, his widow surviving until 1881. William H. Alexander secured his education in the public schools and then learned the carpenter trade. In 1870 he came to Eugene and for many years was successfully engaged in contracting and building, many structures still standing in evidence of the high quality of his workmanship. Among the important buildings erected by him were the Lincoln school, the gymnasium of the University of Oregon, the Congdon school, the Matlock building and many residences throughout this locality. In 1914 Mr. Alexander was appointed city building inspector and is still the incumbent of that position. On September 26, 1900, Mr. Alexander was united in marriage to Miss Belle Chapman, of Eugene. He is a republican in his political views and has always taken an active interest in public affairs, particularly such as have related to the welfare of his own community. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Chamber of Commerce. He has been square in all of his dealings in a business way and has been conscientious in performing the functions of his office, so that all who know him speak of him in terms of high regard. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
