Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 1126. WILLIAM KOEHLER now one of the oldest practicing dentists of Portland, is a native of Bavaria, Germany, born November 28, 1833. He is of German ancestry. His father, Frederick Koehler, was a surgeon, and many of the ancestors of the family were members of the medical profession in their native land. Dr. Koehler was educated and began the practice of dentistry before coming to this country. In 1854 he came to New York, and after three months' residence there, came to San Francisco, spent some time at Placerville and Mokelumne Hill, and in 1863 came to Oregon, where he has been constantly engaged in his profession. His first office was on the corner of Front and Morrison streets. At that time he occupied the only brick building in the city. In 1872 he had his office at the corner of Front and Yam Hill streets, and he lost some $1,500 by the fire that visited that building. He then located at the corner of First and Yam Hill, and later at Yam Hill and Morrison. While there he sold out, but when the building at No. 241 First street was finished he opened his office, where he has since been found during office hours. The Doctor has had the experience of twenty-nine years in the city of Portland, in his business, and has done work for many of the best citizens of the town, and as evidence of the esteem and confidence that they all feel for him they are all his patrons still. He is progressive and has kept up with the times. He has all the modern improvements, and is a kind-hearted gentleman and worthy citizen. He was married in Portland, in 1864, to Miss Jane Birmingham, of Ireland. They have had five children, born in this city: William, now druggist of this city; George Francis is a promising physician and surgeon; Maggie, Josephina and Francis. They reside in a nice home which Dr. Koehler has had built on the corner of Tenth and Montgomery streets. The Doctor has been Treasurer of the Dental Society, and Deputy of the District for the A.O. U. W., and has represented this order at the Grand Lodge of the State. He is a Republican, and has been one ever since the organization of the party. He has led an honorable and upright life, and is one of Portland's most worthy citizens. The following are corrections submitted by Bill Koehler, a descendant of this family.
