Lockley, Fred. "History of the Columbia River Valley, From The Dalles to the Sea." Vol. 3. S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1928. p. 415. WALTER L. CORNELL Walter L. Cornell, treasurer and manager of the Continental Security Company, of Portland, is a lawyer by profession, a fact which has enabled him to give a high type of service to this company, which specializes in handling commercial paper, in which it has attained success. Mr. Cornell was born in Adrian, Michigan, on the 21st of June, 1880, and is a son of A. W. and Martha (Bates) Cornell. His father, who was long engaged in the lumber business, is deceased, and the mother still resides in Michigan. Walter L. Cornell completed the course of the public schools and attended the University of Michigan during 1902-3, after which he completed his law studies in Detroit College and graduated in 1904. He then became attorney for a large mail order house in Detroit, where he remained until 1912, when he came to Portland and became connected with the Eilers Music House. As the legal representative of a committee of creditors, he collected about five hundred thousand dollars worth of paper, after which he followed out that line of work, handling a vast amount of commercial paper individually until becoming identified with his present concern. On January 4, 1924, he associated himself with Virgil A. Crum and organized the Continental Security Company, the officers of which are as follows: Virgil A. Crum, president; Thomas G. Farrell, Charles H. Stewart and A. J. Davis, vice presidents; W. M. Evans, secretary, and Walter L. Cornell, treasurer and manager, the offices of the company being in the American Bank building. The company handles musical instrument and piano paper exclusively, dealing only with established and reliable music dealers, and in its operations covers Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah. The company has a capital of one hundred and fifty-one thousand six hundred dollars and total resources of over seven hundred and ninety-two thousand dollars, a remarkable showing for a four-year-old enterprise of this kind. Mr. Cornell has devoted his efforts untiringly to the interests of the business and has proven an able and dependable official and a business man of sound and reliable judgment. In 1909 Mr. Cornell was united in marriage to Miss Leone Hickmott, of Detroit, Michigan, and they are the parents of one child, Darrell, who was born in Detroit and is now a student in the Grant high school. Mr. Cornell gives his political support to the republican party, while fraternally he is a member of Friendship Lodge, No. 160, A. F. & A. M., of which he is a past master; Friendship Chapter, No. 48, R. A. M., of which he is a past high priest; Oregon Commandery, No. 1, K. T, of which he is the generalissimo; and Portland Chapter, No. 116, 0. E. S., of which he is a past worthy patron. He belongs to the Alderwood Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He has taken an active part in the various movements for the advancement and betterment of Portland and is regarded as one of the progressive and enterprising citizens of the community, commanding the respect and good will of his fellowmen. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
