Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 89. W. M. HUBBS The Hubbs Planing Mill Company has one of the solid and prosperous industrial enterprises of Silverton, which was established by W. M. Hubbs and a partner in January, 1912, under the firm name of Hubbs & Andrews. Subsequently Mr. Hubbs acquired the sole ownership of the business, which in 1916 became known as the Hubbs Planing Mill, and in 1925 W. E. Batchelor bought a third interest in the business, which is now conducted as the Hubbs Planing Mill Company. The mill, which has always been in its present location, is devoted to the manufacture of sash, doors, cabinet work, screens, mouldings and allied lines, and the company also handles glass and Rasmussen's paints for the local trade. Floor space of about six thousand square feet is occupied by the mill and space of similar size by the office, salesroom and for storage. Four men are ordinarily employed and the business has enjoyed a steady patronge during its entire existence, due to the sound business methods followed and the high quality of the mill products. W. M. Hubbs was born in Michigan in 1874 and is a son of W. P. and Laura (Carter) Hubbs, the latter now living in Silverton. His father was a wagon maker by trade and the owner of several hundred acres of excellent land in Minnesota, to the operation of which he devoted himself until about 1900, when he came to Oregon, his death occurring soon afterwards. W. M. Hubbs secured his education in the public schools of his native state, after which he remained for a time on: his father's farm. Later he learned the carpenter trade and, coming to the coast, followed the contracting business until 1912, being in Portland three years and at The Dalles six years, after which he located in Silverton and engaged in contracting until entering his present business, in which he has met with well deserved success. Mr. Hubbs was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Jones, who was born in Stayton, Oregon, and is a daughter of Silas and Rebecca Jones, pioneers of this state. Mr. Jones is deceased and the mother now lives at Quinaby, Oregon. Mrs. Hubbs acquired a good public school education and later was graduated from Willamette University. To Mr. and Mrs. Hubbs have been born three children : Mildred Frances, aged ten years, Margery Belle, aged seven, and Marion Elizabeth, aged two, all of whom were born in Silverton. Mr. Hubbs is a Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Mystic Shrine. He belongs also to the Knights of Pythias, and is an active member of the Silverton Chamber of Commerce, in which he has served on a number of committees. Mrs. Hubbs is a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Parent-Teacher Association. Mr. Hubbs has proven a public-spirited citizen by his consistent support of all measures for the advancement of the city's welfare and progress and as a business man has made a creditable record, his course indicating what can be accomplished through individual effort, carefully directed. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
