"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 482. WILLIAM RUSSELL Was born in Gallia county, Ohio, September 11, 1827, where he resided with his parents until 1836, when, upon their moving, he accompanied them to Knox county, Illinois, of which place his father is still a resident. On April 6, 1848, he accepted an offer of five dollars a month to drive a team across the plains to Oregon. On arrival he first settled in Marion county, but in 1849, made a short visit to California; returning, however, soon afterwards being shot with a poisoned arrow by some Indians, while passing through a portion of Southern Oregon. In 1865, he came to the Siuslaw valley, purchased his present farm of five hundred and thirty acres -- known as the "Mountain House," a view of which appears in this work, where is established the post-office named after the old pioneer D. B. Cartwright, our subject being the post-master. Married his present wife, formerly Mill N. C. Cartwright, January 12, 1866, by which union there are five children, viz: Mary E., Emma J., Charles E., Nannie M., and Darius B. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
