"Illustrated History of Lane County, Oregon." Portland, Oregon: A. G. Walling, publisher, 1884. pg. 476. HON. WESLEY SHANNON Among the most honored of Oregon's pioneers is this gentleman. Born in Union county, Indiana, January 9, 1820, at a very tender age he was taken to Henry county, where he went to school and resided until 1836, when he accompanied his father to Knox county, Illinois, whence, March 31, 1845, in company with his brother, Davis Shannon, and others, he started to face fortune in the unknown wilds of Oregon. On his arrival he settled on land now owned by John F. Miller, and located about eight miles northeast of Salem, the district being then called Champoeg. He then, in the following year, accompanied Elijah Bristow to Pleasant Hill and assisted that veteran in hauling the logs and building his house and the others then erected there for Robert Callison and William Dodson. Here for three weeks this little band of pioneers subsisted on the small supply of flour they had brought with them for Oregon City, the only town of the time, while for the more solid food they depended on their guns. Mr.. Shannon followed farming as an occupation until 1863, when he took up his residence in the city of Salem and in 1872 came to Eugene City, of which place he is still a highly respected resident. He was elected to the territorial council in 1849, and was instrumental in having the name of the county changed to Marion, while to him is the credit due of having drawn the bill locating the county seat of Marion. Married July 15, 1847, Elizabeth Simmons, a native of Randolph county, Indiana, who came to Oregon with her father, Samuel Simmons, in 1845, and settled in that year in what is now Marion county. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
