Clark, Robert Carlton, Ph.D. "History of the Willamette Valley Oregon." Vol. 2. Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1927. p. 41. W. W. CALKINS One of the strong and influential figures in the financial circles of Eugene is W. W. Calkins, president of the United States National Bank. A lawyer by profession, he was long actively and successfully engaged in practice, being numbered among the leading members of the bar, and since turning his attention to other lines of effort has shown the same acumen and sagacity which characterized him as a lawyer. Mr. Calkins was born in New York in 1859 and is a son of R. D. and Sarah (Whipple) Calkins. In the early '60s the family moved to Wisconsin, where they lived a number of years, and late in life the parents came to Oregon, where the father, who was a merchant, spent the remaining years of his life. W. W. Calkins received a good public school education and then engaged in teaching. Later he took up the study of law and in 1881 was admitted to the bar in Wisconsin. He then went to Minnesota and for twenty years was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1901 he came to Eugene, Oregon. For a number of years he has not practiced law, his business interests making heavy demand on his time and attention. In 1916 he was chosen president of the United States National Bank of Eugene and is still holding that position. A man of sound judgment and well denned opinions in practical affairs, he is regarded by his business associates as particularly well qualified for leadership of large enterprises and has been a prominent factor in the splendid growth which the United States National Bank has enjoyed. On July 4, 1883, Mr. Calkins was united in marriage to Miss Anna Rasmussen, a native of Wisconsin, and to them have been born three children, namely: Jessie, who is the wife of Frank T. Morgan; Russell, a lieutenant in the United States Navy, now stationed at the New York navy yard; and Jeanette, who is alumni secretary of the University of Oregon, and editor of "Old Oregon," the official magazine of the University Alumni. Politically Mr. Calkins is a republican and has served in the Oregon house of representatives and two terms in the state senate. He was a member of several important committees and rendered faithful and able service to his constituency. While residing in Minnesota he served as district attorney and probate judge. He is a member of the Methodist church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and of the Eugene Country Club. No movement for the material, civic or moral betterment of Eugene has ever lacked his whole-hearted support and he has long stood among those whose influence and efforts have been devoted to the upbuilding of the community. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios.
