Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co. 1893. p. 356. W. W. ROYAL, M.D. Of East Portland, was born in Virginia, September 16, 1835, a son of John Royal, who was a native of the State of Maine, of English ancestry who were early settlers of the colonies. John Royal married Miss Hannah Sargent, also a native of Maine, and had six children, four of whom are living. Dr. Royal, their third child, graduated at Bowdoin college, Brunswick, Maine, in 1862, and at once entered the Union army, as a surgeon, and during the whole period of the sanguinary struggle ministered to the wants of the wounded and dying. The Tenth Army Corps, with which he was connected, was a part of the Army of the Potomac, and also of the Army of the James. The Doctor's position as surgeon brought him in contact with the horrors of the great Civil war, and he did all in his power to alleviate the sufferings of the "boys in blue" who were wounded in defense of the Government; and the duties of the army surgeon with a heart to sympathize with the intense human suffering, were often most depressing, but the Doctor "staid" with the "boys" until he was mustered out in 1866. After returning from the war he began his practice in Maryland, but did not like it there, and moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where he practiced several years. He was married there in 1869, and the following year he removed to San Diego, California, where he practiced several years, and where two of his children were born. After six years' practice in San Diego he moved to Santa Rosa, same State; but, becoming convinced of the bright future in store for the State of Oregon and the city of Portland, he removed hither and purchased property, opened an office, built a dwelling and became identified with the interests of East Portland, where he has since resided. He has a good residence, stable and carriage, which he has built according to his own ideas. He has a large practice, and has nearly worn himself out in the profession. He is a member of the K. of P., and P. C. of Phalanx Lodge, No. 14, of Portland, and since coming to Portland has been Surgeon of the Grand Army of the Republic, Sumner Post, No. 12, for eight or nine years. In 1888 he was an active member of the Oregon State Medical Association, and he is an honorary member of the Foresters. Before the war the Doctor was a Douglas Democrat in his political sympathies, but since then has voted with the Republicans. March 13, 1869, is the date of the Doctor's marriage to Miss Helen A. Eddy, a native of Michigan, and they have had four children. The two younger were born here in Oregon. ******************* Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in March 2006 by Diana Smith.
