Hull, Lindley M., compiler and editor. "A History of Central Washington, Including the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and the Columbia Valleys." Spokane: Press of Shaw & Borden Co., 1929. p. 49. C. C. RICKMAN deceased. Mr. Rickman came from Oregon to the Wenatchee Valley in 1883, and was the second man to bring a family into the country. Mrs. Rickman was a native of Salem, Oregon, while Mr. Rickman formerly hailed from the state of Missouri. A daughter, Ione, came to the Rickman household in 1884, the first white child born in what is now Chelan County. For many years she has been known as Mrs. C. R. Bradford, living in Oregon. Mrs. Rickman will be remembered by old settlers as a woman of unusual worth, and she was well equipped for pioneer life. She was a most capable home builder, and had a large love of service, which, with her kindly disposition caused her to be much appreciated in the new and scattering settlements. Mr. Rickman, though limited to the most crude and restricted opportunities of an isolated settlement, demonstrated his ability to overcome obstacles, and he was probably one of the best business men that ever came to the Wenatchee Valley. His capacity for work was amazing, and his good management had in ten years time brought him substantial prosperity. He located land (squatter right) west of what is now the town of Wenatchee, and lying between Washington and Fifth Streets. He also selected 160 acres in Swaukane Valley, this time using the Desert Act. Still later he acquired a large irrigated hay ranch in the Colocken country, which under his operation became valuable property. On April 3, 1897, Mr. Rickman was killed in a runaway accident while driving a four-horse team, and Mrs. Rickman passed away August 29, 1916. They left five children, Mrs. Thomas H. Grosvenor, Mrs. H. L. Upham, Mrs. R. G. Russ, all of Wenatchee, and Mrs. C. R. Bradford, and Leonard Rickman of Oregon. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2013 by Diana Smith.
