Bergman, Hans. "History of Scandinavians in Tacoma and Pierce County with brief history of Tacoma and early settlement." Tacoma, WA, 1926. pp. 102-103. Gustaf Bjorkman Born in Kil, Varmland, Sweden, March 12, 1864. He left home and his fatherland April 1, 1885, and emigrated to America, coming to Muskegon, Mich., where he was employed in the lumber industry until August, 1889. He then came out to the Pacific Coast, settling in Tacoma. Here he took up his work as a saw-mill man and for a number of years held various responsibility positions, such as sawyer, foreman, etc. He would undoubtedly have been successful in other enterprises, but his health had become impaired, therefore he decided to go into another line of business. He brought a half interest in a grocery business nad adopted the firm name of Freedlund nad Bjorkman, on Cushman and 11th streets. There they were engaged in business for ten years until 1905, when they moved down to K Street to a building they bought. This structure was burned down, after which the present building was erected at 1016 So. K Street. Upon the death of Mr. Freedlund, the senior partner, Mr. Bjorkman bought the other half interest from the estate and has since been the sole proprietor of the business. Mr. Bjorkman was married in 1893 to Tilda Larson, who was born in Glava parish, Varmland, in 1864. Mr. Bjorkman and family have been for about 35 years been members of the Swedish Tabernacle church in Tacoma. He was for ten years chairman of the congregation, also for some time treasurer, and has been vice chairman for a number of years and a member of the board of trustees. They have four children, three sons and a daughter: Frank B., who is on banking business in Chicago; Milton and Ryner, who are with their father in the business, and Elvira, at home with her parents.
