"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 363. GEORGE M. HOWELL Among the young men who are products of our local institutions and who have by their progressive careers and their achievements reflected credit upon the county which molded their characters and gave direction to their energies, is he whose name forms the caption of this review. Though at this writing not yet thirty years of age he is already among the leading farmers of his section and he is forging forward at a rapid pace. Mr. Howell was born in Oconto county, Wisconsin, on June 3, 1871, his parents being George and Julietta (Duel) Howell. The family came to this county in 1878, and in the public schools here established and in the State Agricultural College at Pullman he acquired his educational discipline. Thus fortified for successful farming, he purchased a farm of two hundred and eighty acres about four miles southwest of Albion, and devoted himself with all the energy and force of his youthful and ardent nature to its cultivation and improvement. As a result he is now the owner of one of the finest and best improved rural homes in his section and on his premises are all needful buildings and machinery, including an up-to-date header and a fine steam threshing outfit of the latest and most approved model. Fraternally, Mr. Howell affiliates with Colfax Lodge, No. 14, A. O.U. W., and with the Pine Grove Grange, No. 115, located north of Albion. In this county, on November 28, 1895, he married Miss Lucy E., daughter of S. E. and Hattie (Simms) Lowe, and a native of Oregon. They have two children: Floyd Edmond, born September 10, 1897; and Clarence Martin, August 23, 1900. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2009 by Diana Smith.
