An Illustrated History of the State of Washington, by Rev. H.K. Hines, D.D., The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL., 1893, page 297 DR. G.S. ALLISON, the oldest physician in practice in Spokane, Washington, was born in Missouri, in 1848, son of J.C. and H.N. (Jackson) Allison. His father was born in Tennessee, and his grandfather, James Allison, was a native of South Carolina. Grandfather Allison moved to eastern Missouri in 1819, being one of the first settlers of that place, and there spent the rest of his life and died. J.C. Allison was the youngest child in the family. He resided on a farm near Louisiana, Missouri, all his life, and died there in 1879. The Doctor's mother was descended from the Jacksons of Kentucky. She was left an orphan at an early age, and was reared by her grandparents. She died in 1873, leaving six children, the subject of this sketch being the second born. Both parents were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Allison received his literary education at Abingdon, Illinois, and soon after leaving school began the study of medicine under a private instructor. He attended medical lectures at St. Louis, where he graduated in 1871. After practicing a year in Missouri, he located in central Illinois, where he was successfully engaged in his profession until 1882, when he came to Spokane Falls. During the winter of 1881-'82 he studied at Bellevue Hospital College, graduating there in the spring. At the time he located in Spokane, this city contained only about 800 people. Here he at once established himself in a good practice, and has had a successful professional career. He built the pleasant home in which he resides, owns other valuable property here, and is thoroughly identified with the best interests of the place. He is a member of the County Medical Society, he and his wife are Presbyterians. Dr. Allison was married in 1876 to Miss Ella E. Mariner, a native of Tennessee. They have four children: Ida, Mabel, Walter and Gladdis.
