Hull, Lindley M., compiler and editor. "A History of Central Washington, Including the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and the Columbia Valleys." Spokane: Press of Shaw & Borden Co., 1929. p. 288. MR. and MRS. JOHN FRANK GATES subjects of this sketch and natives of Minnesota and Wisconsin, respectively, came to Washington Territory near the mid-seventies. Their location was in the Puget Sound country. They came west separately and one year apart. Their acquaintance was formed at Tacoma, and their marriage took place near that city, February 27, 1879. Four sons were born to this union: Harvey W., of Malaga, Harley P., of Wenatchee; Roy, of Ellensburg; and F. Len, who died in the year 1910. Fortunately, they met with no Indian trouble, but aside from such an experience, they encountered in full measure the stern realities of pioneer life. Several years after marriage they located land on the headwaters of the Cowlitz River, to reach which they had to travel 75 miles over rough horseback trails, and for many years this was their means of transportation to the outside world. In the course of time the Northern Pacific Railroad Company built a line through Chehalis, and Mr. Gates became the first station agent at this town. In the year 1910 the Gates family came to Central Washington and located at Malaga. Mr. Gates passed away in 1921. For years now Mrs. Gates and son H. W. Gates have conducted a general merchandise store, and the Malaga postoffice. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in September 2007 by Diana Smith.
