"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 341. JOSEPH NAFFZIGER a prosperous and well-to-do farmer about seven miles northwest of Pullman, was born in Canada, April 3, 1848, his parents being Joseph and Barbara (Yancie) Naffziger. When he was about two years old he was taken to Lee county, Iowa, where he grew to man's estate, receiving such educational advantages as are to be had in the public schools of that state. When eighteen years old he accompanied the remainder of the family to Kansas, where they farmed for the ensuing eight years, the father taking government land. In 1886, however, our subject came to Whitman county and purchased a quarter section of land, where we now find him. In due time he found himself master of sufficient funds to warrant his purchasing another hundred and sixty acres, and to the cultivation and improvement of the entire place he has devoted himself with assiduity and energy ever since. He practices the diversified plan to a considerable extent. His place is well improved everywhere, bearing testimony to his thrift and industry. He has a nice little family orchard of about one hundred and fifty trees, all in full bearing. The marriage of our subject was solemnized in Kansas on September 2, 1876, when Miss Carrie Mosier, a daughter of Frederick and Dora Mosier, became his wife. They have five children: Joseph F., attending the Northwestern Business College in Spokane: C. E., a student in the same institution: W. H.. attending the local public school; Millard A.: and Earl L. Mrs. Naffziger passed away in this county on January 17, 1899, and her remains lie buried in the cemetery at Guy. The family belong to the Mennonite church and are active workers therein. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2009 by Diana Smith.
