"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 411. J. O. JOHNSTON an enterprising business man of Colfax, is a son of the west, having first opened his eyes to the light in southern Oregon, the date being 1868. He lived there until about seventeen years old, making the best use possible of the public schools of his native county, but in 1885 he came to Colfax and pursued his studies further in the Baptist college here located. After spending about three years in college, he engaged in the sheep industry, continuing in the same for about four years. He subsequently disposed of his flocks and opened a meat market in Colfax, and to the business then established his best energies have ever since been given. He maintains one of the best shops in the city, and his wide-awake business methods, absolute reliability and unvarying devotion to the interests of his customers have secured for him a large and desirable patronage. Fraternally, Mr. Jolmston affiliates with the W. of W. and its woman's auxiliary, also with the Red Men and the Masons. He was married in Colfax in 1890 to Mable L. Station, a native of South Dakota and a member of a family to which belongs the honor of being pioneers both of that state and the northwest. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston are parents of three children, namely: Oliver Wilbert; Iva Myrtle; and Clara Ann. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2009 by Diana Smith.
