Hull, Lindley M., compiler and editor. "A History of Central Washington, Including the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and the Columbia Valleys." Spokane: Press of Shaw & Borden Co., 1929. p. 249. JOHN R. LANHAM left West Virginia in the year 1889, and came to the Wenatchee Valley, where he had been proceeded by his brother Z. A., six years. He promptly identified himself with the community by the selection of a homestead about two miles above Cashmere on what was generally known as Pine Flat. This particular section has since been noted for its fine orchards. During these early years of slow development, Mr. Lanham taught school, and performed any other work that yielded the wherewithal to make improvements on the ranch. About the year 1890, Mr. Lanham sold his holdings on Pine Flat, and became a member of the W. T. Rarey Mercantile Company of Wenatchee, with which he was connected five years. Later, he became associated with his brother, Z. A. Lanham, in operating the large ranch of the latter near Wenatchee. In common with many others he has now reached the point where he can make a vacation period of the winter months by spending the time in such restful places as Florida and California. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in February 2012 by Diana Smith.
