"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 255. PROF. SAMUEL M. McCROSKEY The prominent educator whose name forms the caption of this review is a native of east Tennessee, born December 28, 1859. He grew to manhood in the commonwealth of his nativity, receiving there his educational discipline, which was unusually extensive, it being his privilege to complete the classical course in the Methodist College of Hiwassee, from which institution he received the degree of bachelor of arts in 1881, and the master's degree at a later date. Upon graduating he assumed charge of an academy at Ducktown, Tennessee. After spending one year there he came to Whitman county, located near Colfax and again engaged in school work. For seven years he was principal of the Palouse city schools. He has been engaged in the leading schools of the county almost constantly since he first came to the Palouse country, his professional work being only twice interrupted, when for brief periods he served as deputy auditor and deputy treasurer. In 1900-01 he was principal of the Tekoa schools, but in the last election he was the choice of the people for the office of county superintendent. Prof. McCroskey has labored assiduously and zealously for the educational upbuilding of the county during the seventeen years of his residence here, attending, every institute held in the county during that period, with a single exception, and it was but fitting that his services should be recognized in his election to the superintendency. He is intimately familiar with the needs of the county schools and determined that these needs shall be satisfied as far as is in any way possible. We may well expect him to prove a very efficient officer. Fraternally Mr. McCroskey is affiliated with the W. of W. and its auxiliary society, the Women of Woodcraft, also with the Red Cross. His marriage was solemnized near Colfax on December I, 1886, when Miss Maggie A. Cochran, a native of Tennessee, became his wife. They have two children living, Lois and Lusker, also one, Oscar, deceased. Mr. McCroskey owns a pleasant home in Palouse city. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in August 2008 by Diana Smith.
