"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 413. THOMAS KNOX a farmer and stock-raiser on Alkali flat, three miles southwest of Wilcox, is a native of California, born April 19, 1861. He grew to man's estate in the Golden commonwealth, and for several years was engaged in mining there, but in 1888 he came to this county, and he has been in the business of farming and cattle-raising continuously since, realizing good results. Shortly after his arrival in the county Mr. Knox married Mrs. Emerette Harper, a daughter of Emsley and Mary A. (Raub) Fincher. Mrs. Knox was born near Monroe, Wisconsin, on December 17, 1853, and in that state she resided until nineteen years of age, receiving her education there. In 1872, however, she accompanied her parents to this county. Their first home was on Union flat, but they afterward removed to Penawawa bar on the Snake river. On September 4, 1875, she married Mr. Milton C. Harper, a native of Illinois, born in 1847. He had crossed the plains with ox-teams in 1853, locating first in the Willamette valley, Oregon, whence, in 1872, he came to Whitman county and homesteaded the place where the family now reside. Mr. Harper died on May 22, 1887, leaving- five children: Maggie, wife of John Stover, residing near Guy; James P.; Ivy P., wife of Frank Hanna, of Alkali-flat; Nellie, wife of John I. Majors, a farmer in this county; and Wilcox. By her marriage with the subject of this sketch Mrs. Knox also had five children: Annie L., Jessie, Josephine and Walter, living, and Elizabeth, deceased. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in January 2011 by Diana Smith.
