"An Illustrated History of Whitman County, state of Washington." San Francisco: W. H. Lever, 1901. p. 409. WILSON JOHNSTON, M.D. Among the successful young professional men, of whom Whitman county has so many, must be ranked the gentleman whose name forms the caption of this article, and to whom representation is certainly due in a work of this character. Our subject is a highly educated and skilled physician, having devoted the assiduous efforts of so many years to the study of the profession in all its various phases, thereby acquiring a knowledge of the same such as few practitioners many years his senior possess. Dr. Johnston was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1867. He acquired his preparatory education in the excellent public schools for which that province is especially noted, also taking a course in a collegiate institute. After completing his educational discipline he served an apprenticeship in the bricklaying trade, but his ambitions were for a higher vocation, so in the spring of 1890 he removed to Louisville, Kentucky, and entered the Kentucky School of Medicine, from which he graduated. He began the practice of medicine in Addison, West Virginia, which city continued to be his home until November, 1895, when he was requested to and did become resident physician to the Louisville City Hospital. In April, 1896, Dr. Johnston went to New York City to take a post-graduate course in surgery and diseases of the eye, nose and throat, after completing which he came west, locating first in Moscow, Idaho. He remained in the practice there until the spring of 1898, then removed to Colfax, where we now find him. His abilities as a physician and surgeon are being more and more widely recognized and his practice is growing accordingly. He is local surgeon for the 0. R. & N. The Doctor is a charter member of the Whitman County Medical Association, which he has served in the capacity of secretary and of which he is now vice-president. He also belongs to the state medical societies of both Washington and Idaho. Fraternally, he belongs to the F. & A. M. and the Woodmen of the World. In Tacoma, Washington, in 1899, Dr. Johnston's marriage to Miss Florence Corbett, a native of California but a daughter of Canadian parents, was duly solemnized. They have one child, Margaret. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in July 2009 by Diana Smith.
