Hull, Lindley M., compiler and editor. "A History of Central Washington, Including the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and the Columbia Valleys." Spokane: Press of Shaw & Borden Co., 1929. p. 443. WILLIAM K. McKENZIE, SENIOR In 1895, Mr. McKenzie, who with his family had lived a number of years in the Puget Sound country, left Seattle and located fifteen miles up the Entiat Valley. Their claim was on Potato Creek, a short distance from the Entiat River. With right good will Mr. McKenzie and the boys, James, Nick and David turned to an erected a substantial and roomy log house as well as other buildings. Mr. McKenzie was a stone mason, and spent much time away from home following his trade. He took contracts for such work, and built some of the great stone gates, or arches, in Woodland Park in Seattle. He was much attached to his home, and when he was older lived on it steadily, until unable to do the ranch work. He and Mrs. McKenzie went to live with their son William K. McKenzie, Jr., at Wenatchee. He died in 1924, having reached great age. Mrs. McKenzie passed away December 21, 1926. His oldest son, David, lives in Tacoma, and is engaged in the manufacture of monuments. For a number of years James took care of things at home, and operated the farm. About twenty years ago he was married to Miss Fronia Downing, whose parents began pioneer life near Colfax, Washington, near fifty years ago. James became a forest ranger, an occupation he followed 18 years. In 1923, he was transferred from the Entiat district to Easton, Washington, where he was in charge of a larger field. His health failed in 1925, and on January I, 1926, he passed away, to be mourned by his wife, daughter and one son, and many other relatives, as well as numerous friends. W. K. McKenzie, Jr., married Gladys Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Harris. Lizzie married J. W. Bonar. Nick lives in British Columbia. Helen (Nellie) was married to M. C. Clark. She died in February, 1923, leaving two small boys. ******************* Submitted to the Washington Biographies Project in May 2010 by Diana Smith.
