MEIZE (born Meizejeski) Submitted by: Vikki, VGDriver1 at aol dot com Source: "Lewis River News," Woodland, Cowlitz Co., WA, Thursday, 28 May 1959 Paul Meize killed by falling snag while logging on Rock Cr. Tuesday Logger Paul C. Meize, 43, of 14925 Lewis River Rd., was killed by a falling snag while operating a cat on Rock Creek about five miles north of Ariel Store at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Laurence Kujava and Earl Teal were working about 150 feet away and looked up after the snag fell. Meize was pinned by the log to the shift levers of the tractor, according to Clark County Deputy Coroner John Egan who interviewed the men. Kujava and Teel rushed Meize to Vancouver Memorial Hospital in Kujava's car, but he was dead on arrival. Meize's son, Bob, had been at the logging scene earlier but was not present at the time of the accident, according to Egan. The accident occurred in Cowlitz County, but because Meize was pronounced dead in Clark County, an autopsy was to be performed by the Clark County Coroner's Office Thursday afternoon. Meize was born Jan. 25 in Stanton Island, N.Y., lived the early part of his life in Deep River, Conn., and came west in 1936. He had lived in the Ariel area the past 15 years and operated his own logging business. He is survived by his wife Alma, a son Bob, and a daughter Joan, all of Ariel; parents Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Meizejeski, Deep River, Conn., eight brothers, Charles and Tom Meizejeski, both of Stanton Island, Vincent Meizejeski, Ariel, and Peter, John, Edward, Joseph and Stanley Meizejeski, all of Connecticut; four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Pandiani, Mrs. Stanley Laskowski, Mrs. Edward Shumbo and Mrs. Charles Rainer all of Connecticut. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Lee Andrews. Burial will be at Yale Cemetery. The Woodland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
