Laroy, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away Aug 22, 2007, of complications from Alzheimer's. He was 86. Harold grew to be a strapping 6-foot-2-inch athlete who excelled at sports on the basketball court and baseball diamond. After graduating from Kalama High School, he served in the Coast Gusrd during World War II. Returning home, he played semi- professional baseball for the Cincinati Reds farm team and was wooed by baseball great Casey Stengel for a pro ball contract. Hal turned down the offer, preferring to be near his family. He and his wife Norene, settled in Kalama and lived there until his death. He continued his love of sports by playing city league basketball and baseball for many years and overseeing his son, Randy's athletic accomplishments. Harold is survived by his wife, Norene, a sister, Kathryn Johnson of Longview; two children, Chris Shepard and Randy Laroy of Vancouver; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Brianna, Lauren and Jesse; a great-granddaughter, Jaelyn Aurora; and many nephews and cousins. Harold's hobbies included bird hunting, boating, woodworking, picking berries and traveling. He built the current family home in Kalama, 42 years ago, and craftedd and sold many woodworking items. Until recently he was often seen on his daily round-trip walk from his home to the Kalama Marina. He had a ready laugh and was always there to help others in need. His family will miss him terribly.
