OBITUARY - GERALDINE "GERI" (TRUMAN) WHITING Submitted by: Jenny Tenlen Source: "The Seattle Times", Seattle, King Co., Washington; 1 Nov 1987, p. B5. SISTER OF ST. HELENS' TRUMAN DIES CASTLE ROCK, Cowlitz County _ Harry Truman's sister, who defended the man who refused to leave his home at the base of Mount St. Helens before its 1980 eruption, has died at the age of 81. Geraldine "Geri" Whiting died Thursday [29 Oct 1987] in her Castle Rock home. Whiting had staunchly defended her brother's right to remain at his Spirit Lake Lodge despite the danger from the nearby volcano. When then-Gov. Dixy Lee Ray talked about forcibly removing Truman from his home, Whiting said, "Wouldn't they make a good pair?" She commissioned a memorial for her brother at the Lions Club park in Castle Rock.
