Seattle, King Co., Washington. 19 Jan 1926, p. 7 "Woman Pioneer of Cowlitz Taken by Death" Kelso, Tuesday, Jan. 19---Mrs. Robert Downing, pioneer resident of Cowlitz County, who crossed the plains in 1852 when a child of 8 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Barlow, who took up a donation land claim on the Columbia River below Mount Solo, died at Vancouver, Wash., yesterday. She was born in Detroit, Mich., October 21, 1844, and was the last of seven children. For the last forty years she and her husband have lived at Vancouver. They had no children. Mrs. C. H. Olson of Kelso is a niece, and E. B. and B. L. Barlow of Kelso are nephews. Mrs. Downing attended the organization meeting of the Cowlitz County Pioneer and Historical Society last summer, and is the second of the charter members to die, Eugene McCorkle having been the first.
