"Early Pioneer of Lewis County Dies"

Graveside funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Claquato for Arthur Davis Browning, 83, one of Lewis county's early pioneers, who died the 17th at his home in Riverside, Okanogan county, following a long period of invalidism. The Fissell Funeral Home directed burial, which was under Christian Science auspices. Mr. Browning was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Browning, Indiana pioneers, who settled near the present village of Adna in the early 60's. He was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., November 18, 1852. He was tow years old when his parents came to Lewis county, where 75 years were spent. On the occasion of his last visit to Chehalis about a year ago, Mr. Browning stated that he had shaken hands with Washington's first governor, Isaac I. Stevens, and its last one, Governor Clarence D. Martin. Mrs. Browning was the former Miss Florence Page, who was at one time Lewis county school superintendent. Her parents were pioneers of bunker creek district. The family left Lewis county some years ago and first located in the Wenatchee district, where several years were spent. Surviving besides the widow are a daughter, Miss Edna Browning of Riverside; a brother, John Browning of Chehalis; and four sisters, Mrs. Edna Newland and Mrs. Jessie Gregg of Chehalis, Mrs. Annie Royal of Portland and Mrs. S. E. Burnham of Boise, Idaho.
